Scale Monitoring Tool - SMT

Print Product Sheet.

Scale Monitoring Tool (SMT) is a novel technology where advanced tracers are used for downhole direct scale monitoring. SMT will be ready for well pilot test. Se animation here.

There are two functions in the tool;

  • Scale Alarm Tracer (SAT) designed to detect downhole scale deposition and
  • Scale Inhibitor Tracer (SIT) designed to indicate scale squeeze placement along the well-bore

SMT will be a guide to both when to treat wells and how to design an the squeeze for optimal placement. This will enable a more efficient chemical scale control strategy with cost savings due to less inhibitor squeezes and reduced well damage since the monitoring could enable prevention in due time and with an optimal design.

These functions are achieved by advanced chemical tracer design, placed in three different chambers in the tool. There are three tracer chambers, one for scale detection, one containing tracer that is sensitive for inhibitor and a reference tracer for life-time monitoring. The data is acquired by sampling water and subsequent laboratory analysis.

SMT is designed for retrofit installation in a tubing, liner or screen, where the tracer rods are mounted in our retrievable Tracer Carrier Tool, as shown below. The tool does not introduce any risk related to well integrity, no cable is needed, and it can be set by cable / tractor. The tool is small in size and has an ID which allow for most tools to pass through and does not imply any flow restriction.

Note that the placement tracer, Scale Inhibitor Tracer (SIT), can also be installed directly inside screens for new wells, read more about SIT for screens.
