Scale Monitoring Tool (SMT)

Scale Monitoring Tool (SMT) is a novel technology where advanced tracers are used for downhole direct scale monitoring. SMT will be ready for well pilot test. Se animation here.

There are two functions in the tool;

  • Scale Alarm Tracer (SAT) designed to detect downhole scale deposition and
  • Scale Inhibitor Tracer (SIT) designed to indicate scale squeeze placement along the well-bore

SMT will be a guide to both when to treat wells and how to design an the squeeze for optimal placement. This will enable a more efficient chemical scale control strategy with cost savings due to less inhibitor squeezes and reduced well damage since the monitoring could enable prevention in due time and with an optimal design. Scale Inhibitor Tracer – SIT

Scale Inhibitor Tracer, SIT, will indicate inhibitor placement along the well-bore during a scale squeeze. 

Poor inhibitor coverage across the completed zone can result in severe formation damage. Poor placement is difficult to detectbefore the damage and prevention is too late. The SIT can give valuable data to detect an poor squeeze and an optimized design can be applied. This is illustrated below where inhibitor is placed in the heal section only. Given pre-installed SIT at three places, only the blue tracer will be detected during back-production after the squeeze. The red and green will not be seen as they have not been contacted by inhibitor. Read more

Corrosion Monitoring Tracer - CMT

Corrosion Monitoring Tracer - CMT can indicate rate of metal loss.

In well where corrosive fluid is produced corrosion will take place in the tubing and elsewhere. The loss of metal can often limit the life time of the tubing, unless corrosion inhibitor is applied. In such cases a monitoring technology is necessary, such as use of corrosion coupons or logging.Both of these methods will require intervention.

The CMT is a permanently installed tracer carrier that is sealed off. In the carrier thin sections will corrode first and enable water in the well to contact the tracer rods. By sampling water topside for analysis, the presence of tracer can proved. In this way metal loss rate can be monitored. Read more
